Co-creation and Inclusion [in] and [through] Spatial Design
IJAC invites authors to submit original research papers for the upcoming special issue (June 2024) focused on alternative methods involving technologies, tools, and platforms to facilitate co-creation, and in this way, the inclusion of diverse stakeholders in architectural and urban design.

Theme
Emerging devices, platforms, agents, and designers can contribute to the co-creation of spatial design products by offering tools, expertise, and support for collaboration and creativity. By utilizing these technologies and approaches, designers can democratize the design processes and (co-)produce more effective, efficient, and user-centric spatial designs. The specific focus of this journal issue will be on approaches, roles, agents, and strategies for inclusion and co-creation making use of Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, smart buildings, autonomous devices, robots, and software (Pak, 2017). These include but are not limited to:
- Facilitating the inclusion and representation of user needs
- Enabling the integration of user diversity and individual differences,
- Designing flexible and dynamic spatial programs,
- Developing design rules or systems that regulate buildings in an open-ended manner,
- Fostering self-organization orchestrated by the designer and technologies,
- Embracing spontaneity in use.
While the potential benefits of employing emerging devices, platforms, agents, and artificial co-designers for the co-creation of spatial design products are numerous, several challenges also need to be addressed. The contributions are expected to discuss these from a critical perspective, describe alternative ways to address these challenges and outline clear directions for the future.
The submissions should be a full-length paper (4000 – 6000 words) complete with illustrations. The main body of the paper is to be preceded by an abstract of less than 150 words, as well as a list of 4 to 8 keywords. The submitted research article should be complete and original, not published elsewhere and not currently under consideration for another journal. Papers must be submitted only to the IJAC online system at: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ijoac. The call is open to all authors. The submission deadline is 1 September 2023. When submitting your manuscript please choose to submit for the ‘Special Issue–eCAADe 2024’.
Submission guidelines
Please follow the “Research Articles” guidelines. https://journals.sagepub.com/author-instructions/JAC. The preferred format for your manuscript is MSWord. LaTeX files are also accepted. MSWord and (La)Tex templates are available on the Manuscript Submission Guidelines page. There is no need to follow a specific template when submitting your manuscript in MSWord. However, please ensure your heading levels are clear, and the sections clearly defined. When formatting references, authors must ensure they use, the SAGE Vancouver reference style. There are no fees payable to submit or publish in this journal.
Review Process
All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process, involving at least two independent reviewers.
Accepted papers will be published online and indexed in leading databases.
